Medieval dress / sleeveless surtout andra, dark blue
This loose-fitting, floor-length surcoat is made of sturdy cotton canvas . The heavy canvas weave makes this medieval dress robust and heavy, making it particularly suitable for spring and autumn. The hem, armholes, and neckline are covered with fine cotton fabric. The armholes are very generously cut and end at hip level. From the hip, so-called geren (wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) are inserted at the sides, giving the hem sufficient width. This surcoat is an authentic reconstruction of a 14th-century surcoat and was worn by lower-class women.
The surtout, originally worn by men, was a long dress for women that was popular from the 13th century. As the name suggests, it was worn over the hut. To give the skirt sufficient width, it was common to use wedges of fabric on the sides. A special form was the sleeveless surtout (also called a suckenie ), which was very popular among women of all social classes. At first, the armholes were cut normally, but over time they became wider and eventually reached the hips. This did not please the Church at all, hence probably the name "Hell's Window" or "Devil's Window" for these large armholes. Under the sleeveless surtout, the Frau wore a long-sleeved chemise.
Numerous representations of the surcot can be found in manuscripts of the period, for example in the Roman de la Rose manuscript of 1348 or in the Speculum humanae salvationis from 1360 (sheet 37).
