In the Middle Ages , when a knight's life hung by a knife in the neck, gorgets and chain collars were born, protective pieces that guarded the throat, nape of the neck, and upper chest. Forged with interlocking rings in the classic European pattern, these iron guards were fitted with leather straps to fit the warrior, either under a helmet or attached to an open helmet. Their lightness compared to a full hood made them a popular choice for knights, crossbowmen, and infantrymen, ensuring durability without sacrificing mobility.
