The Gothic Opulence of the 14th Century
This dress is inspired by Burgundian fashion and the Italian opulence of the 14th century, a period of the Late Gothic. The velvet details on the collar, sleeves, and hem were hallmarks of wealth and status in the courts of Burgundy, France, and Italy. The black color was especially prized in the Middle Ages due to the difficulty of dyeing it, reserved for nobles and the high bourgeoisie. The adjustable laces on the midsection, back, and sleeves allowed the garment to be adapted to the body, a technique characteristic of the Gothic period that combined elegance with functionality.
