Enjoy Medieval Dress With Hell Windows, Bliaut Amal, Blue/Natural
This long medieval dress, made of cotton fabric, has a fitted cut and contrasting details. The side seams are open from the hip to the arm and have lacing, allowing the dress to be individually adjusted to the body. These side openings are called "hell windows" because they reveal a glimpse of the undergarments and were not well received by the church. The lacing has metal cords and can be easily passed through the embroidered eyelets. In the skirt, so-called "geren " (fabric wedges) are inserted at the sides and center, creating a generous hemline. The flared sleeves and decorative stitching at the sleeve hems and around the openings give the dress a noble character.
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud ) and is based on the fashion of the 11th to 13th centuries. Whereas previously women's clothing was quite loose and concealed the body's shape, now clothing became increasingly form-fitting. The bliaut was originally a courtly outer garment because the flared sleeves were impractical for work. Over time, this style of dress also became established among the middle class, but generally with narrow sleeves. The bliaut was not only worn by women; men also wore this outer garment, although in a knee-length version.
The distinctive features of the bliaut are the "hell windows" at the waist and the flared sleeves. These "hell windows" initially resembled large armholes and grew larger over time, eventually reaching the hips. The trumpet sleeves also became exaggerated, some extending to the floor. The bliaut was typically paired with a slip dress, a veil, and a narrow belt.
Representations of a bliaut from that period can be found, for example, in the fresco sant'elena in the basilica of san lorenzo in Milan and in the hortus deliciarum , an encyclopedic work from the end of the 12th century.
