Burglinde Medieval Underdress with Trumpet Sleeves - Natural
Status Symbol in the High Middle Ages
Dresses with trumpet sleeves appeared in the 12th century as a symbol of social status in the High Middle Ages. These extra-wide sleeves were not suitable for everyday work, so wearing them indicated nobility or high social standing. Both men and women of the 12th and 13th centuries wore simple undergarments with trumpet sleeves beneath their valuable, tight-fitting, and richly decorated outer garments. Historical depictions appear in the Sant'Elena fresco in the Basilica of Saint Lawrence in Milan and in the Hortus Deliciarum (approx. 1180). In the 15th century, these garments were worn visibly under a short-sleeved cotehardie, as shown in Gerard David's painting Madonna Surrounded by Saints.
Lightweight Cotton with Authentic Historical Cut
This loose, floor-length medieval underdress is made of 100% lightweight cotton in a natural color. The gores (wedge-shaped pieces) inserted at the sides give the skirt a generous hem width. The wide neckline allows it to remain hidden under the outer garment. The special sleeve cut stays tight on the upper arm with drawstrings for individual adjustment, while the very wide hem creates the characteristic trumpet shape. With a total length of 150 cm (size M), it can be worn under a surcoat, cotehardie, or bliaut. Machine wash at 40°C on a gentle cycle, do not tumble dry. Sizes S to XXL available.
