You must send the item or items back to us by your own means. Shipments sent "carriage forward" (cash on delivery for shipping) will not be accepted.

Viking pinafore dress / Hilja apron dress with embroidery, blue/mustard yellow

Pinafore dresses were an integral part of Viking attire. Basically, these outer garments were characterized by their straps and simple tubular shape. These dresses were available with slits, with so-called geren (fabric wedges), with pleats, and in variants that overlapped at the center front. The hem ended at calf height.

The Viking Age pinafore (also known as a pinafore, hanging skirt, or hangerock) served two different functions. While the simple version was used as an apron to protect clothing, the decorated version was more of a status symbol and was adorned with borders, embroidery, chains, and tortoise brooches. This form of dress is historically documented by finds from Haithabu and depictions from Birka.

Our pinafore dress is made of sturdy canvas (100% cotton) and is therefore very durable. It has a loose fit and slits on the sides. The hem, straps, and neckline are in contrasting colors. The embroidery on the chest is in the Jelling style (also Jellinge style) and depicts two dragons or snakes. The motif dates back to the 10th century and can be found on the silver cup of the Danish King Gorm. The decorative stitching on the hem and neckline is formed by hexagonal stitches. This type of stitch was already known in the High Middle Ages and was especially popular for hems.

For a harmonious Nordic outfit, we recommend a simple Viking underdress, a narrow leather belt, tortoise brooches, and a leather pouch.
