The U.S. 1860 Heavy Cavalry Saber
During the American Civil War, two types of sabers were issued to the Union cavalry: light and heavy. Although the light version was also popular, many considered the heavy model, nicknamed the Old Wrist Breaker, to be the proper saber to take into battle. Its blade, over 3 feet long, offered much greater reach than most sabers, and its considerable weight provided excellent strength and leverage. The sturdy brass basket hilt had three bars to protect the hand, and the leather-covered, wire-wrapped grip section ended in a robust pommel.
For its own version, Cold Steel® drew inspiration from antique pieces in private collections. The 1055 carbon steel blade is spring-tempered and would pass the British proof test (sword test). This beautiful saber comes with a steel scabbard with two carrying rings, and thus can be easily attached to a saddle or belt.

The carbon content and relatively low levels of other materials in this steel make it a very sturdy material, free from the brittleness inherent in most high-carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that need to have high impact resistance, and therefore is often used for large fixed-blade knives, machetes, and swords.
