At the end of the 13th century, the sword was the dominant weapon for knights and men-at-arms. However, with the arrival of plate armor, its dominance on the battlefield began to crumble, as it simply was not designed to pierce or dent this new type of armor. The war hammer was arguably the ideal weapon against opponents clad in plate armor. The heavy hammer head could massively dent a helmet and armor with just a few blows, and the spike could open up this armor like a modern can opener! In battle, the hammer head was generally used first to knock the enemy down and leave them unable to fight. Once the fallen and defenseless opponent was on the ground, the hammer would be flipped over and the spike used to pierce their helmet and deliver the killing blow. to relocate.
