Large Snettisham torque, replica
A torque, also called a torc, is a metal neck ring that was common in many cultures during the European Iron Age. For the Celts, the gold torque appears to have been an important item that identified its wearer as a person of high rank, and many of the finest works of art of the ancient Celts are, in fact, torcs.
The original that served as a model for our replica was discovered in 1950 near Snettisham, in the English county of Norfolk. Many other Iron Age objects were found in the same area between 1948 and 1990. A coin found in the strands of this torque suggests that the treasure was buried around 75 BC.
The Great Snettisham Torque is the best-known artifact of the British Iron Age and is now on display at the British Museum in London. This necklace was crafted with great skill and extraordinary care in the first half of the 1st century BC and is one of the most sophisticated gold objects from antiquity. It consists of 64 wires, each 1.9 mm wide: eight wires were twisted together to form eight individual metal strands. These, in turn, were intertwined to complete the final torque. The end pieces were cast in molds and then soldered to the strands.
