CD: Kerstin Blodig/Ian Melrose-Kelpie - Var Det Du-Var Det Deg?
From Celtic-Scandinavian roots to new acoustic music
'Var det du - Var det deg?' is like a journey through the frozen landscape of Norway, where every frozen tree and every snowdrift brings with it a new and exciting secret. And then you experience the wonders of spring and summer, and that is why this CD encompasses the entire arc of perfection, of music and the seasons in love and suffering, fairy tales and truth.' (P. Seitz)
The duo Kelpie, Kerstin Blodig and Ian Melrose - 'the Celtic-Scandinavian dream team' - consists of two renowned personalities from the global Celtic and Scandinavian music scene, whose regular collaboration has spanned thirteen years across various projects including: their experience in concert tours and international festivals as the duo Kelpie, as soloists, with the groups Norland Wind and Talking Water, as well as numerous CD productions in which they acted as producers, composers, arrangers, and musicians, all of which are focused on their new duo album.
'Var det du - Var det deg?' (Was it you or were you?), a singable play on words with a musical sound, in the tradition of Norwegian sung dance melodies, is the title of the new album. Like their previous CD, the cover is adorned with a painting by the Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen: 'Nøkken', the water troll. 'Kelpie' is the Scottish counterpart, a mysterious aquatic creature from Scottish mythology. It is unmistakable that the duo Kelpie has a penchant for mystical creatures, as the 'troll expert' Kerstin dedicated her solo CD 'Trollsang' to the underground in 2004.
The new CD combines two interesting elements: new titles from Kelpie's live repertoire and new compositions for the soundtrack of Kai-Uwe Küchler's slide presentation 'Fjord-Norway'. While the first Kelpie CD aimed to be purely acoustic and deliberately arranged with restraint to reflect the impression of a live concert, the new album is designed as a large-scale production and, through the possibility of overdubs, reflects the full spectrum of Kelpie's multi-instrumental musical and compositional possibilities and diversity of ideas. The three fantastic guest musicians, Peter Jakk, Talking Water bassist and percussionist Urs Fuchs, and Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, radio producer, and musician Leiv Solberg, active here as a violinist on the Norwegian natural instrument hardingfele, give the CD the finishing touches with brilliant additional timbres.
Kerstin and Ian offer a varied program and consciously play with opposites: from the typical and intimate Kelpie arrangements to opulent orchestral pieces, from rough, traditional music, sung and played microtonally, unusual for the Central European ear, to beautiful and catchy ballads, from exuberant and wild underground festivals to religious psalms. The CD conveys an emotional diversity of different inspirations, whether traditional folk ballads or images of breathtaking mountain and fjord landscapes.
The highest level of audiophile quality, recorded, mixed, and mastered by sound engineer Jörg Surrey, completes this special acoustic album. Emotional depth and dramatic tension, beautifully crafted arrangements, fused vocal harmonies, mystical flutes, virtuoso guitars, and the crystalline voice of Kerstin Blodig floating above it all.
