A gambeson is almost indispensable for free-fighting and exhibition fighting. The gambeson, also called gambison, padded jacket, or aketon, was worn under chainmail or plate armor in the Middle Ages. It made the knight's armor more comfortable to wear and could also absorb enemy blows, thus reducing the risk of injury.
This Ulfberth gambeson is made of three layers of fabric: an outer layer of cotton fabric (canvas), a polyester padding layer, and a cotton inner lining. The padding on the upper body is diamond-shaped. The padding is horizontal at the waist and vertical in the hip and arm areas. The gambeson closes with leather straps and metal buckles at the center front. Stitched leather details reinforce particularly exposed areas. The sleeves are attached with nesting laces and can be removed as desired. The high collar greatly increases the comfort of wearing armor pieces or chainmail on the neck.
