The word Glamdring comes from the Elvish language Sindarin and means something like foe-hammer. The history of this magic sword, whose blade emits a pale light when Orcs are near, is mysterious. Gandalf the Wizard found it (just as Bilbo Baggins found his sword Sting) in the troll caves in Rhûdaur after the trolls were turned to stone by a ruse. In Rivendell, Elrond deciphered the runic inscription which stated that it was once forged for Turgon, King of Gondolin. This great sword remained by Gandalf's side until his last day in Middle-earth.
