This handmade Viking knife (Sax (Seax)) features a sharp blade made of 256-layer Damascus steel and a wooden handle with a brass end cap and ferrule.
The delivery includes a beautiful tanned leather sheath with richly decorated brass fittings. Thanks to two leather loops attached to brass rings,
you can carry the knife horizontally on your belt in typical Viking style.
The term Damascus steel, Damascene steel, or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel.
The name is derived from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Generally, a hard, high-carbon material and a
softer, low-carbon steel are joined through repeated forge welding and folding. High-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breakage. With this technology, during an era of inferior and varying
steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels could be combined. Due to the different colors caused by varying carbon content,
impressive patterns of alternating layers are also created, such as twisted shapes, like the so-called twist Damascus or rose Damascus. It is largely for this reason
that Damascus swords of the Middle Ages were said to have inherent magic.
