Leather Birka belt bag, Viking bag based on an original find from Rösta, Sweden
This high-quality, beautifully crafted Viking Age bag, made from 4 mm thick leather, is reconstructed from a find in a grave in Rösta, Jämtland (Sweden, approx. 10th century). The highlight is the brass appliqués, which are based on the historical model and make the bag a true jewel.
These types of bags are also known from finds at the Viking settlement of Birka in eastern Sweden, which is why they are often referred to as Birka bags. However, in archaeological circles, it is believed that their origins actually lie with the nomadic Magyar equestrian people (modern-day Hungary). These belt bags likely arrived in Scandinavia from the eastern steppes through trade between the 8th and 10th centuries. Typical of these Hungarian-style leather bags (also called tarsoly) was their lyre shape and the elaborate metal fittings that adorned the front flap.
Due to its historical past, this impressive bag is a great addition to historical attire in reenactment or LARP and is equally suitable for portraying Vikings, Magyar steppe riders, Rus, Avar, or Slavic warriors.
