The underdress or chemise was a fundamental garment in the female wardrobe from the Early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. This design reproduces the gathered neckline inspired by 10th-century Viking archaeological fragments, a technique that remained in use for centuries throughout Europe. Women of the 10th-15th centuries wore these linen or cotton garments as a base layer under outer dresses, providing comfort, hygiene, and protection for the outer fabric. The adjustable front opening with ribbon and the adjustable hems on the sleeves are authentic features of the medieval period.
