Medieval dress with windows of hell, bliaut amal, red/black
This long medieval dress made of cotton fabric has a fitted cut and contrasting details. The side seams are open from the hip to the arm and are laced, so that the women's dress can be individually adapted to the body. These side slits are called windows of hell because they reveal a view of the underwear and were not well received by the church. The laces have metal cords and can be easily threaded through the embroidered eyelets. In the skirt part, so-called geren (fabric wedges) are inserted on the sides and in the middle, which creates a generous hem width. The flared sleeves and decorative stitching on the sleeve hems and around the windows give the dress a noble character.
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud ) and is based on the fashion of the 11th to 13th centuries. Whereas previously women's clothing was rather loose-fitting and concealed the curves of the body, clothing now increasingly became body-hugging. The bliaut was originally a courtly outer garment because flared sleeves were impractical for work. Over time, this style of dress also became established among the middle class, but usually with narrow sleeves. The bliaut was not only worn by women, but men also wore this outer garment, albeit in a knee-length version.
Characteristic of the bliaut are the windows of hell in the waist area and the flared sleeves. The windows of hell initially looked more like large armholes and became larger over time until they finally ended at the hips. The trumpet sleeves also took on exaggerated shapes, some of which reached the floor. The bliaut was usually combined with a slip dress, a veil and a narrow belt.
Representations of a bliaut from that period can be found, for example, in the fresco Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the Hortus Deliciarum , an encyclopedic work from the late 12th century.
