Soldier Torso
DescriptionPractical body protection
The Epic Armoury Soldier Torso is a handmade breastplate and backplate designed to protect the front and back of the torso and abdomen. This low-fantasy design is intended to suit a variety of characters and is inspired by historical medieval armor. Its simple shape comes in a variety of sizes and is easily worn by most people thanks to its curve and ability to overlap under the arms. The plate rests on the hips and has small rolled tabs around its edges.
Secure the Soldier Torso by fastening the breastplate and backplate over your chest. Six leather straps are riveted to the backplate and adjust using the buckles attached to the breastplate. Fit and adjust it to your size, ideally over a padded gambeson for extra comfort. Made of 1 mm thick polished steel and chrome-tanned leather straps, this armor is built to withstand the abuse of a LARP or reenactment with the usual care for leather and metal armor.
Available in Polished Steel and Epic Dark and comes in sizes Small/Medium, Large/X-Large, and 2XL/3XL.

Maintenance
Epic Armoury metalwork products should be treated with acid-free quality vegetable oil or wax and stored in a dry place. Metal armor containing leather parts would require separate maintenance for the leather. Read the "Leather Straps and Fittings" section below for leather cleaning and maintenance with leather care products.
Degreasing and preparing your armor for use
When you open your armor, you might be overwhelmed by the smell of grease and oil. The oil has been applied to protect your armor during storage and transport. Use a degreasing product or mineral spirits and a dry cloth or paper towels to remove all oil from the plate armor pieces. It is a bit more difficult to remove all the oil from chainmail links, but it can be done in the same way. Clean off as much as you can with a dry cloth, and with the remaining oil, you can remove the grease from the chainmail with mineral spirits or another solvent by spraying it onto the links. You can also choose to completely submerge your chainmail in a degreasing product and use your hands to agitate the metal in the solution; this will completely remove all oil and grease from your links. After removing the oil, make sure to dry the armor thoroughly. Strong, warm sunlight is excellent for drying your armor, but you can also use a hair dryer or a heat gun to speed up the process. Be careful not to overheat any leather parts when using a heat gun.
Cleaning
Humidity is the enemy of armor and chainmail. If your armor gets wet, it is important that you dry it thoroughly as soon as possible. After handling, wearing, or after six months of storage or display, all metal should be wiped down with a clean cloth. Lightly grease the clean surface with an acid-free quality vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can apply a coat of wax to the entire surface of the exposed metal. Let the wax dry for a couple of hours and then lightly buff it with a soft cloth.
Rust prevention and removal
Store your armor in a dry place and check it every two months for signs of rust. If you find any, remove it by gently rubbing the affected spot with a slightly abrasive pad dampened with acid-free quality vegetable oil or wax. Epic Dark products are specially treated to resist rust, but they should still be treated with oil and stored in a dry place.
Leather straps and accessories
Clean them by removing dirt with a stiff brush, then gently rub with leather soap and a clean, damp cloth until the leather looks clean. Remove the soap with a separate damp cloth to wipe away any soap residue and then use a dry cloth to wipe the remaining water from the leather.
You should always condition the leather after cleaning it, as the soap will have removed some of its natural oils. Treat the leather with mink oil, olive oil, or beeswax with a clean cloth, gently rubbing a small amount of oil or wax into the leather in circles. Let the leather soak in the oil before wiping it with a final clean cloth to remove excess residue.
