Medieval articulated scissors, hand forged
The medieval scissors we offer here are handmade. Each half of the scissors was forged in one piece, and then both halves were riveted together in the middle. The stems are elegantly curved upward and form generous scissor eyes. This makes the scissors easier to hold and handle, even with larger hands. The forging marks have been deliberately preserved to give the historical scissors a rustic, authentic character, and the surface has been blackened to increase rust resistance. Although these medieval scissors are fully functional, the blades have only been sharpened. If necessary, the edges would need to be honed to improve their sharpness.
While the first evidence of the use of so-called ironing scissors dates back to the 15th century BC (100 BC) in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, modern hinged scissors (two blades mounted crosswise on a shaft) first appeared in ancient Rome around 100 AD. Although ironing scissors did not ultimately replace ironing scissors in Europe until the Renaissance, they were already in use in the Middle Ages, as can be seen, for example, in the Tailor's Window in Freiburg Minster (13th century). Their basic design and functionality have remained virtually unchanged ever since and they are still used today in a wide variety of forms.
This fine and visually appealing piece of ironwork is perfect for everyday stock at medieval markets and reenactment/living history events, and is a great decorative accessory for any medieval seamstress, herbalist, or barber.

Please note:
The above specifications may vary slightly from one copy to another. Since these scissors are a hand-forged product, no two pieces are alike! Slight deviations in shape and/or surface caused by manual work are absolutely normal, and the images above are for illustrative purposes only. The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly caring for the scissors, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.
