Looking for a simple way to secure your medieval headpiece? A fillet might be just what you need.
A fillet is a band of fabric worn around the head. It can be tied or fastened around the head to serve as a base for securing a headpiece, or it can be worn over the headpiece to keep it in place and as a decorative element.
This fillet is designed to be tied around the head and is a great base for attaching a veil, a coif, a cap, or a more elaborate headpiece. It is suitable for a wide variety of medieval characters.
The fillet measures 50 cm long by 10 cm wide. It has four ties (two on each end) approximately 42 cm long. The length is sufficient to wrap around the head once with a generous amount left to tie in a bow at the back, or to wrap around the head twice, tying the laces in a knot at the front.
It is made of a natural-colored cotton and linen blend (87% cotton, 13% linen).
Headbands were very popular in the medieval period. In medieval Europe, women often covered their hair for religious reasons, for warmth, and to keep it clean. Natural or bleached linen was a common choice. It was gentle on the skin and hair and durable enough to hold headpieces in place. Furthermore, it was easy to clean and could withstand the harsh cleaning processes used to remove hair grease and other impurities that accumulated on items worn close to the hair.
