Long before modern military uniforms existed, the Knights Templar had already solved the problem of battlefield identification with an elegant and striking solution: pristine white, red cross. The white symbolized the purity of the monk; the red cross, the vow to shed blood in defense of the faith. Together, they formed the most feared and respected symbol of the Crusades (12th–14th centuries). The surcoat—or surcot—was worn over chainmail or plate armor, protecting the metal from the sun and allowing the knight to be instantly recognized in the chaos of combat.
