The Beagnoth Seax, also known as the Thames Scramasax, is one of the most emblematic pieces of 9th-century Anglo-Saxon weaponry. Discovered in 1857 in the River Thames in London and kept today in the British Museum, this weapon was not only a faithful battle companion but also a testimony written in runes to the power and identity of its bearer.
A testimony inscribed in iron
The original blade, richly engraved, displays the longest runic inscription found on a weapon from this period. It bears the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, the runic alphabet used in the British Isles, and the name Beagnoth, likely that of its owner or the master armorer who forged it. This detail makes this seax a unique object of medieval archaeology.
The reconstruction of a relic
Our replica precisely follows the proportions and design of the original. The carbon steel blade, with a single edge and a deep fuller, evokes the robustness of Germanic weapons. The handle, crafted from wood reinforced with brass rivets and rings, ensures strength and authenticity.
