Raptor Katana Unokubi-Zukuri – Cormorant Neck Cut
Inspired by the Nagamaki, forged for modern precision
The Raptor Katana Unokubi-Zukuri takes its name from the distinctive shape of a cormorant's neck, and its silhouette is as lethal as it is elegant. Inspired by the legendary Japanese Nagamaki from the 12th to the 14th century, this blade embodies the strength of the past with the functionality of the present. The Unokubi-Zukuri geometry, with an acute-angled shinogi-ji and a diamond-section kissaki, provides a sublime balance between cutting ability and maneuverability.
The spirit of the bird of prey
Designed under the direction of master James Williams, the Hanwei Raptor series was conceived for practitioners who want to train without compromises, even outside the dojo. Each katana is forged from 5160 carbon steel and heat-treated via marquenching, reaching a hardness of 57 HRC, which allows it to withstand intense impacts without deforming. This steel eliminates the need for a thicker blade, keeping the weight and handling true to the Japanese originals.
The Unokubi-Zukuri katana stands out not only for its historical shape but also for its ability to cut soft or semi-hard materials without forming burrs. Its full tang (nakago), secured with two mekugi, ensures strength and durability. The handle design, with a wood core, genuine ray skin (samegawa), and a rough tsuka-ito, offers a firm grip even under pressure.
Elements that evoke the winged predator
Every detail pays homage to birds of prey: from the blackened iron tsuba to the feather-motif menuki. Even its wooden saya is protected with an anti-fingerprint coating to maintain its sobriety and resistance.
