The dagger of the Roman legions
This Roman pugio is a decorative replica inspired by historical specimens used by legionaries during the late Republic and the early centuries of the Empire.
Alongside the gladius, the legionary's primary weapon, the pugio played an essential role as a secondary weapon in hand-to-hand combat. Its characteristic wide, double-edged blade offered efficiency and control at close range.
The design of this type of dagger was influenced by weapons from the Iberian Peninsula, whose military tradition left a significant mark on Roman weaponry from the 2nd century BC onwards. The pugio remained in use during the early centuries of the Empire, although its presence decreased over time.
Design and construction
This replica features a classic, wide blade with a grooved profile, characteristic of historical pugios.
The hilt is composed of layers of wood and metal, assembled with rivets, offering a robust and decorative design.
The scabbard is made of brown leather with metal reinforcements and incorporates four rings that allow it to be attached to the belt, evoking the original suspension systems.
The edges are not sharpened and the tip is rounded, making it a safe piece for collection, display, or reenactment.
