Mantis Katana
In Japanese culture, the praying mantis has always been a symbol of cunning and strength and is, therefore, a highly respected leitmotif on Japanese swords.
With a new Hanwei L6/bainite blade in shobu zukuri style with bo-hi as well as outstanding koshirae, the praying mantis katana is a sought-after and functional piece.
The tsuka-ito made of silk in a muted green and the deep brown of the saya provide a beautiful contrast with the dark copper and gold details of the tsuba, fuchi, and kashira.
The praying mantis stalks its next prey, reflecting the strength and grace of this extraordinary katana.
Bainite is a carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and impact resistance. Bainite has been known for several years as an excellent component for the production of katana blades, but until now it has only been used by top-level master smiths for the production of katana blades with a bainite body and an extremely hard martensite edge. (yakiba) is a very difficult process that requires a sophisticated heat treatment procedure.
Hanwei now masters this difficult process and uses L-6 tool steel (a very robust, low-alloy carbon steel) as the base for the production of this katana sword. The blades are forged as usual and then carefully heat-treated to achieve the optimal formation of bainite and martensite. They are finally polished.
