Lorica squamata, Roman scale armor with double shoulder guards, brass
The Roman armor known as lorica squamata was primarily used (in many different forms and types) in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, at the height of the Roman Empire. Although a complete suit of this armor has not yet been found, many fragments and individual scales (squamae) have been recovered, and numerous surviving depictions lead experts to believe that the lorica squamata was not only worn by officers of the Imperial Roman army, such as centurions, but also by legionaries and auxiliary troops, cavalrymen, archers, and even standard-bearers and musicians.
This high-quality, two-part reproduction of a lorica squamata is handmade and fully wearable. It consists of brass plates approximately 0.4 cm thick (with a central ridge), which are interlaced in horizontal rows and sewn onto a sturdy brown canvas base (cotton canvas). This creates a dense pattern reminiscent of fish scales. The sleeveless cuirass is trimmed with durable brown leather and features two leather straps and brass buckles on each side, allowing it to be adjusted to fit a variety of sizes. It reaches below the hips and has a scalloped bottom edge and a round neckline with an opening at the back of the neck.
The chest/back armor comes with additional shoulder protection. This fully removable double shoulder guard (which also consists of brass scales sewn onto fabric with a stitched leather edge) fastens at the front with a brass chest hook and at the back with four adjustable leather straps and brass buckles.
This impressive Roman armor is ideal for reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film.
