Roman Fulham-type gladius with scabbard, 1st century AD.
The gladius, the standard weapon of Roman legionaries from the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD, was used in many different versions over the centuries. Although designed primarily for stabbing, the much-feared Roman short sword was also an extremely effective cutting weapon. However, during the course of the middle and late Roman Empire, it was gradually replaced by the longer spatha.
This Roman sword is a reconstruction of a classic Fulham-type (or Mainz-Fulham) gladius from the early 1st century. This specific type of gladius takes its name from the discovery of a 1st-century AD sword, which was recovered from the Thames near Fulham (London) in 1883. The remains of the original, the iron blade with the broken tang and without hilt or scabbard, or the preserved frame with chape and two decorative bronze plates, are now in the British Museum in London.
With its parallel, straight (or sometimes slightly waisted) cutting edges and long, leaf-shaped point, the Fulham model is considered a transitional type between the Mainz type and the later Pompeii type. However, since both Mainz and Fulham gladii were in use at the same time in the first half of the 1st century, some historians tend to categorize the Fulham simply as a variation within the Mainz group.
The gladius offered here has a wide, straight, double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel (neither hardened nor heat-treated) with a flat diamond-shaped cross-section and a long, pointed tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened, and the full-length blade tang is screwed to the end of the handle (brass threaded nut). The handle is made of wood, and the guard has a brass plate on the blade side.
The one-handed Fulham sword is delivered with a green wood/leather scabbard with protective brass fittings (a locket, three horizontal bands, and a frame or continuous side border ending with a chape/finial). Cast brass carrying rings are attached to the two upper bands, which allow the user to carry their gladius like a true Roman.
This sword is designed as a collector's piece or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example, to complete your costume.
