Give Roman Gladius Fulham Type With Scabbard, 1st Century.
Fulham type Roman gladius with scabbard, 1st century AD
The gladius, the standard weapon of Roman legionaries between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD, was used in many different versions over the centuries. Although primarily designed for stabbing, the much-feared Roman shortsword was also an extremely effective cutting weapon. However, over the course of the middle and late Roman Empire, it was gradually replaced by the longer spathe.
This Roman sword is a reconstruction of a classical gladius of the Fulham (or Mainz-Fulham ) type from the early 1st century. This specific type of gladius gets its name from the discovery of a 1st-century AD sword, which was recovered from the Thames near Fulham, London, in 1883. The remains of the original – the iron blade with a broken tang and no hilt or scabbard, or the preserved frame with a chapel and two decorative bronze plaques – are now in the British Museum, London.
With its parallel, straight (or sometimes slightly tapered) cutting edges and long blade point, the Fulham gladii is considered a transitional type between the Mainz and later Pompeian types. However, since both the Mainz and Fulham gladii were in use at the same time in the first half of the 1st century, some historians tend to categorize the Fulham as simply a variation within the Mainz group.
The gladius offered here has a broad, straight, double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel (neither hardened nor heat-treated) with a flat, diamond-shaped cross-section and a long, pointed tip. The cutting edges are unsharpened, and the continuous blade tang is screwed to the end of the handle (a brass threaded nut). The handle is wooden, and the guard has a brass plate on the side of the blade.
The Fulham one-handed sword is delivered with a green wood/leather scabbard with protective brass fittings (a mouth strap, three horizontal straps, and a continuous side frame or rim ending in a mounting button). Cast brass support rings are attached to the top two straps, allowing the user to carry their gladius like a true Roman.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
