Chainmail Skirt
DescriptionThe sound of mail worn by a thousand marching soldiers is like music to you. There is a hum, like blood moving in your veins, as if it were the thrumming that propels you forward rather than your own feet.
Your chainmail skirt moves slightly with every stride, a comfort due to its protection and the flexibility it grants you. This is the life of a soldier at its finest.
DETAILS
Epic Armoury’s Chainmail Skirt is a flexible mail armour skirt made of linked steel rings. The chainmail covers the lower body from the waist to the thighs and hangs from the shoulders via two strong leather straps. Each butted steel ring is interlaced with four other rings in a 4-in-1 design, and the skirt features a leather hem to ensure comfort around the waist and groin.
The Chainmail Skirt is ideal for sergeants and heavy medieval infantry looking for armour that does not sacrifice range of motion. Wear it over one of our gambesons for the greatest comfort and authentic wear, securing it with the double-strap belt around the waist (a durable solution to offset the weight of the chainmail!) and adjusting the shoulder straps. Combine this armour with additional metal pieces and clothing from Epic Armoury to satisfy your character's needs.

Maintenance
Epic Armoury metal works products must be treated with a quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax and stored in a dry place. Metal armour that contains leather parts would need separate maintenance for the leather. Read the "Leather straps and fittings" section below to learn about cleaning and maintaining leather with leather care products.
Degreasing and preparing your armour for use
When you open your armour, you may be overwhelmed by the smell of grease and oil. The oil has been applied to protect your armour during storage and transport. Use a degreasing product or mineral spirits and a dry cloth or paper towels to remove all oil from plate armour pieces. It is a bit more difficult to remove all the oil from chainmail links, but it can be done in the same way. Wipe off as much as you can with a dry cloth, and with the remaining oil, you can remove the grease from the chainmail with mineral spirits or another solvent by spraying it onto the links. You can also choose to completely submerge your chainmail in a degreasing product and use your hands to agitate the metal in the solution; this will completely remove all oil and grease from your links. After removing the oil, be sure to dry the armour well. Bright, warm sunlight is great for drying your armour, but you can also use a hairdryer or a heat gun to speed up the process. Be careful not to overheat any leather parts when using a heat gun.
Please note that armour should not be washed with water. This can significantly increase the level of rust and corrosion your armour suffers.
Cleaning
Moisture is the enemy of armour and chainmail. If your armour gets wet, it is important that you dry it thoroughly as soon as possible. After handling it, wearing it, or after six months of storage or display, all metal should be wiped down with a clean cloth. Lightly grease the clean surface with a quality acid-free vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can apply a layer of wax to the entire exposed metal surface. Let the wax dry for a couple of hours and then lightly buff it with a soft cloth.
Prevention and rust removal
Store your armour in a dry place and check it every two months for signs of rust. If you find any, remove it by gently rubbing the affected spot with a slightly abrasive pad dampened with a quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax. Epic Dark products are specially treated to resist rust, but should still be treated with oil and stored in a dry place.
Leather straps and fittings
Clean them by removing dirt with a stiff brush, then gently rub with leather soap and a clean, damp cloth until the leather looks clean. Remove the soap with a separate damp cloth to clean off any soap residue and then use a dry cloth to wipe any remaining water from the leather.
You should always condition the leather after cleaning it, as the soap will have removed some of its natural oils. Treat the leather with mink oil, olive oil, or beeswax using a clean cloth, gently rubbing a small amount of oil or wax in circles into the leather. Let the leather soak in the oil before wiping it with a final clean cloth to remove excess residue.
