Bjorn Flap Coat, Viking Coat, Brown SIZE S
Discover Bjorn Flap Coat, Viking Coat, Brown
Bjorn flap coat, Viking coat, brown, various sizes
Our Viking coat is made of durable cotton fabric (canvas). The body is lined on the inside. The coat has a wide cut so that you can wear it comfortably in a layered look. The total length ends just above the knee and corresponds to representations from the High Middle Ages. We recommend always combining the flap coat with a belt, as it fastens similarly to a modern bathrobe. The belt is not included and must be purchased separately.
The flap coat (also called caftan) was originally a garment of the Eurasian equestrian peoples (including the Huns and Avars) and was brought to the West during the Migration Period or the High Middle Ages. The Vikings and Rus adopted this type of coat or jacket and decorated it with their own tablet-woven ribbons. A typical feature of the Nordic flap coat is the triangular flaps at the front, which fold over each other and are held in place with a belt. Historical depictions of flap coats can be found, for example, on the Sutton Hoo and Valsgärde helmets from the 7th century. Several fragments of these Viking coats were also found in the Viking Age settlement of Haithabu, the most important Viking trading center in Jutland (near Schleswig). The flap coat was combined with a tunic and harem pants. Depictions of warriors on surviving helmets suggest they were worn not only in daily life but also in battle.
