Gustav II's Rapier, Old Version
Gustav II's Rapier by Paul Chen, old version
King Gustav II Adolf (1594–1632) was King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632. As a defensive measure, he intervened in the Thirty Years' War in 1630. People feared the threat posed to the Swedish state and Church by the superior force of Albrecht wei von Wallenstein's troops, making the situation of the German Protestants seem almost hopeless at the time. Gustav, an excellent tactician, led a first-class army, and his position was further strengthened by alliances with France, Brandenburg, and Saxony. In 1632, there was a costly battle against Wallenstein's army at Lützen, which the Swedes eventually won, but in which Gustav was fatally wounded. The Hanwei Gustav Rapier (item no. SH2206) is a replica of this great king's weapon.
The guard of this rapier is unusual but highly effective. The rapier features classic lines. The blade is made of flexible, hardened carbon steel. To ensure low maintenance, the handle is made of stainless steel. A special guard can serve as a blade catcher, and the handle is wrapped with twisted wire. Since the vessel was made exactly the same size as the original, it offers an authentic feel and is also similar to the original in terms of weight and balance. In this antique version of the Gustav Rapier, the vessel obtains its antique appearance through a method developed by Hanwei that gives the stainless steel a museum-quality patina without compromising its corrosion resistance. This attractive finish gives the sword an authentic appearance. The blade can be exchanged for the Hanwei blunt training blade (item no. OH2255), which was designed for safe rapier combat. A matching left-handed dagger (item no. SH2209N) is also available, and it can also be fitted with a combat blade.
