German basket rapier with scabbard, 17th century
This reconstruction of a German rapier with a hilt from the early 17th century has a narrow, very pointed blade made of EN45 spring steel with a diamond-shaped cross-section and a sharp point. The cutting edges are unsharpened, and the continuous tang of the blade is screwed to the end of the handle (steel nut). The complex and elegant locking hilt, with an S-shaped guard and a one-sided protective ring, is made of mild steel, as is the pommel. The handle section consists of a wooden core and a winding of alternating layers of brass wire and laced steel wire. A black leather-covered wooden scabbard with a muzzle plate and steel cap is included in the scope of delivery.
The rapier first appeared around 1500 and remained the favored sword of European nobility and gentry until the late 17th century. This one-handed, usually double-edged Renaissance sword with a long, slender blade and a pointed tip was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon, but could still be used quite effectively as a cutting weapon. It was used primarily by the nobility for military and civilian purposes and was usually equipped with a more or less elaborately designed basket, bell, or bow container that provided better protection for the hand, whether on the battlefield or in a duel. This bladed weapon, which spread throughout Europe in a wide variety of forms, enjoyed great popularity as a fencing, self-defense, or dueling weapon and eventually became a status symbol and an indispensable accessory in the wardrobe of every nobleman or officer.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
