According to historians, the rapier first appeared as a new form of sword at the end of the 14th century and prevailed throughout much of Europe until the end of the 16th century. There is even evidence that it was in use in Spain until the 18th century. The fact that the rapier remained the undisputed civilian weapon of defense and dueling for so long can be attributed to two main advantages: firstly, its long, narrow, double-edged blade was ideal for landing precise strikes from long distances. Secondly, its elaborate vessel (which constantly expanded, from rings, struts, and supports to protective plates and elaborately carved baskets or bells) provided excellent protection and could confidently absorb or deflect strikes.
Although the rapier never proved technically ineffective or obsolete, it sadly succumbed to the dictates of fashion and had to give way to smaller swords.
Luckily, Cold Steel® decided to revive this historical classic with its own modern interpretation designed by Dave Baker. The long, narrow blade of Cold Steel's® rapier with ribbed shell hilt is sharpened and beautifully polished. In the front third, it has a unique, wide fuller that ensures perfect balance. The hilt also reflects the finest craftsmanship and best materials. The classic ribbed basket hilt with its numerous struts and the crossguard guarantee unparalleled protection for the hand. The handle itself is made of wood, covered with deep black ray skin, and wrapped with decorative wire. It ends in a strong, ribbed pommel that perfectly balances the rapier’s long blade.
