In 1147, Pope Eugene III granted the Knights Templar the right to bear the vermilion cross on a white background, a symbol of purity and religious vocation. This two-tone banner—black on the top, white with a red cross pattee on the bottom—flew on the battlefields of the Holy Land and Europe during the Crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries, guiding the Templar knights in their struggle. The same cross was used by Christopher Columbus on the sails of his caravels during his voyages of discovery.
