Milanese Pauldrons
DescriptionYou look at the line of soldiers, knowing that their fate and the fate of your entire unit depends on your word. It is a rather heavy burden, much heavier than the beautifully polished steel Milanese pauldrons you wear on your shoulders.
“We must fight!” you shout for all to hear. “For our homes and our families, we will fight until we can fight no more!” With a resounding cheer, your soldiers prepare for the charge. You draw your weapon, find your resolve, and fix your gaze on the enemy.
DETAILS
Epic Armoury's polished steel Milanese pauldrons are a pair of simple, low-fantasy pauldrons. The pauldrons rest on the shoulders and cover the upper arms and a large portion of the upper back. Both have an attractive curve to add structural strength to the steel while maintaining flexibility thanks to overlapping plates. Asymmetrically designed, the left pauldron is equipped with a vertical plate designed to protect the head from indirect blows. These riveted steel pieces have been polished to a high-gloss finish to appeal to knights in shining armor.
The Milanese pauldrons are adorned with a beveled top plate to further deflect attacks, as well as a chain pin to attach a badge. Secure them by tying the canvas cords to a breastplate or gambeson and tightening the leather straps around your upper arms. They can be used fully with Epic Armoury's Milanese Armor set, as well as other Epic Armoury metalwork products, giving you the freedom to customize your character's costume. Made of 1mm thick mild steel and premium leather straps and fittings, this piece of armor is designed to withstand the abuse of a LARP or reenactment with regular leather and metal armor care.

Maintenance
Epic Armoury Metal Works products should be treated with quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax and kept in a dry place. Metal armor that contains leather parts would need separate maintenance for the leather. Read the "Leather straps and fittings" section below for leather cleaning and maintenance.
Degreasing and preparing your armor for use
When you open your armor, you may be overwhelmed by the smell of grease and oil. The oil has been applied to protect your armor during storage and transport. Use a degreasing product or mineral spirits and a dry cloth or paper towels to remove all oil from the plate armor pieces. It is a bit more difficult to remove all the oil from chainmail links, but it can be done in the same way. Wipe off as much as you can with a dry cloth, and with the remaining oil, you can remove the grease from the chainmail with mineral spirits or another solvent by spraying it on the links. You can also choose to completely submerge your chainmail in a degreasing product and use your hands to agitate the metal in the solution; this will completely remove all oil and grease from your links. After removing the oil, be sure to dry the armor thoroughly. Strong, warm sunlight is great for drying your armor, but you can also use a hair dryer or a heat gun to speed up the process. Be careful not to overheat any leather parts when using a heat gun.
Cleaning
Moisture is the enemy of armor and chainmail. If your armor gets wet, it is important that you dry it thoroughly as soon as possible. After handling, wearing, or after six months of storage or display, all metal should be wiped down with a clean cloth. Lightly grease the clean surface with a quality acid-free vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can apply a layer of wax to the entire surface of the exposed metal. Let the wax dry for a couple of hours and then lightly buff it with a soft cloth.
Prevention and removal of rust
Store your armor in a dry place and check it every two months for signs of rust. If you find any, remove it by gently rubbing the affected spot with a lightly abrasive pad dampened in quality acid-free vegetable oil or wax. Epic Dark products are specially treated to resist rust, but they should still be treated with oil and stored in a dry place.
Leather straps and fittings
Clean them by removing dirt with a hard brush, then gently rub with leather soap and a clean, damp cloth until the leather looks clean. Remove the soap with a separate damp cloth to clear any soap residue and then use a dry cloth to wipe the remaining water from the leather.
You should always condition the leather after cleaning it, as the soap will have removed some of its natural oils. Treat the leather with mink oil, olive oil, or beeswax with a clean cloth, gently rubbing a small amount of oil or wax in circles into the leather. Let the leather soak in the oil before wiping it with a final clean cloth to remove excess residue.
