The sword of the Campeador
Tizona is mentioned in the Cantar de mio Cid and tradition links it to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, an 11th-century Castilian knight whose figure remained forever linked to the ideal of chivalric honor.
The historic sword preserved in the Museum of Burgos features a blade forged in the 11th century, likely in Andalusian workshops, alongside a hilt added in the 15th century in a late medieval and Renaissance style, reflecting its long history. Metallurgical studies led by Antonio J. Criado at the Complutense University of Madrid place the antiquity of the steel around the time of El Cid (Gladius XXI, 2001).
From weapon of war to ceremonial sword
Over time, the Tizona ceased to be solely a weapon and became a historical symbol. According to research by José Antonio de Mesa Alcalde, King Ferdinand the Catholic presented a sword identified as Tizona to Mosén Pierres de Peralta, Marquis of Falces, where it was kept for generations as a noble relic (Genealogía de la Tizona, 2008).
After centuries linked to this lineage and its time in the Army Museum, the sword was finally acquired in 2007 by institutions of Castile and León and permanently displayed in the Museum of Burgos, where it can be viewed today.
