The Tizona is, along with the Colada, one of the two legendary swords of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador, the 11th-century Castilian knight immortalized in the Cantar de mio Cid. Its name—from the Latin titio—evokes a burning brand, an image of the hero's power and determination in battle. This recreation by Marto Toledo reproduces the sword with a richly ornamental gold finish, evoking the ceremonial and symbolic character that the Tizona acquired over the centuries.
The historical Tizona: from the battlefield to the Museum of Burgos
The historical sword preserved in the Museum of Burgos features a blade forged in the 11th century, likely in Andalusian workshops, paired with a hilt added in the 15th century in a late medieval and Renaissance style. Metallurgical studies led by Antonio J. Criado at the Complutense University of Madrid place the age of the steel around the time of El Cid (Gladius XXI, 2001). According to research by José Antonio de Mesa Alcalde, King Ferdinand the Catholic gave the Tizona to Mosén Pierres de Peralta, Marquis of Falces, where it was kept as a noble relic for generations until its acquisition in 2007 by institutions of Castile and León (Genealogía de la Tizona, 2008).
