Gammelt Jern knightly sword with scabbard, 13th century
This beautiful one-handed sword is a replica of one of the best-preserved medieval swords. The original was owned by E.A. Christensen, a well-known Danish sword collector. The drawings he made of the medieval sword were by A.B. Hoffmeyer and were published in the book “Gammelt Jern” (No. 66, p. 88), published in 1968. It is classified as Type XIV according to Oakeshott typology and dates from between 1275 and 1340.
The exact location of the original sword is unknown; it is now in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
The sword has a wide, double-edged blade that tapers towards the point. Two deep fullers run almost the entire length of the blade, and the edges are not sharpened. The crossguard is slightly curved, and the wooden grip wrapped in red leather ends in a faceted Type K pommel. Additionally, the center of the pommel has a red circular accent on both sides.
The sword comes with a red wooden and leather scabbard with a brass chape and a beautiful sturdy leather belt. The belt can be adjusted to different sizes thanks to the floral-looking brass eyelets.
This medieval sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume, and will make your transformation into a proud knight simply perfect.
