Along with the Tizona, the Colada is one of the two legendary swords of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid Campeador, the 11th-century Castilian knight immortalized in the Lay of the Cid. According to Sebastián de Covarrubias, the name Colada refers to a sword forged from cast steel, an alloying process free of impurities that guaranteed a blade of exceptional quality. This Marto Toledo recreation reproduces the sword with a silver finish of great artisanal precision.
The Colada in medieval epic: from battle to duel of honor
In the epic poem, the Colada was won by the Cid in battle against the Count of Barcelona and later given to his knight Martín Antolínez, who wielded it in a duel against Infante Diego González during the Affront of Corpes episode. Like the Tizona, the poem describes the Colada as a weapon capable of terrifying unworthy opponents when wielded by a brave warrior. Although its authenticity is doubted, a blade known as Colada is preserved at the Royal Palace of Madrid, traditionally identified as the Cid's sword, complemented by a 16th-century hilt.
