80 cm Fáfnir wooden Viking shield
A round shield inspired by the Early Middle Ages and Norse mythology
This wooden Viking shield combines the shape of an Early Medieval round shield with decoration inspired by Fáfnir, the dragon of Norse mythology. Its hand-painted black motif stands out against the deep red background, creating a piece for reenactments, displays, and Viking-themed collections. It measures approximately 80 cm in diameter and weighs 4.45 kg.
Plywood with raw leather edging
The body is made of approximately 13 mm plywood, with the perimeter covered in raw cowhide. On the back, three riveted solid wood slats reinforce the assembly. The central slat serves as the grip and is wrapped in leather at the level of the hand hole.
Blued steel boss secured with four rivets
The blued steel boss covers the grip area and is secured with four rivets. Its outer diameter is approximately 19 cm; the boss and the shield hole have a diameter of approximately 11 cm, with a curvature depth of about 8 cm.
The dragon Fáfnir as a decorative motif
Fáfnir appears in the Fáfnismál of the Poetic Edda and in the Volsunga Saga. According to the tale, he was a dwarf who took the form of a dragon to guard a cursed treasure and ended up defeated by Sigurd. The stylized dragon head on this Norse shield brings that legendary inspiration to a contemporary design, without presenting itself as a copy of an archaeological find.

For reenactment, set design, and collecting
Complete a Viking outfit or a living history, theatre, film, or television display. It can also be part of an exhibition or a Norse-inspired decoration. For reenactment or LARP, check the event rules beforehand: its materials and construction do not by themselves certify its suitability for any form of combat or contact.
Measurements and weight may vary slightly between examples. Add the dragon Fáfnir to your Todo Medieval equipment and make the contrast of red, black, and steel the centrepiece.
