Round Viking shield with Fenrir motif, hand-painted, 61 cm ø
The Viking shield offered here is made of approx. plywood, linen, and features a hand-painted stylized motif of the Fenris wolf (also Fenrir, Fenris or Fenrisúlfr) and a sequence of runes from the Elder Futhark (the oldest runic alphabet) that spells out his name.
In Germanic mythology, Fenrir, along with Hel and the Midgard serpent Jörmungandr, belongs to the three enemies of the world. All three are children of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Fenrir fights against the existing order and ultimately embodies the destruction of the world. The gods recognize his danger, use a trick to chain him to a rock, and sink him deep into the earth. For this plan to succeed, the god of war Tyr even sacrifices a hand. The wolf is tamed for a long time until finally, at the time of the twilight of the gods, he breaks his chains and devours Odin. Vidar, Odin's son, kills Fenrir, but it is already too late; the father of the gods falls, and with him, the order of the world.
The shield boss included in the delivery can be easily attached using the provided rivets. It can be fixed to the shield and offers enough space even for strong Viking hands. The back of the shield is painted black and equipped with a solid wood handle.
Although this wooden shield is too light and thin for full contact, it is still a great accessory for reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film and will make your transformation into a proud Norse warrior simply perfect. It is also a beautiful collector's piece or display item or decorative object for all lovers of the Viking Age.
