Roman Scutum Legionary Shield

For centuries, the Roman legions advanced from the coasts of Hispania to the deserts of the Orient, conquering territories and building one of the greatest empires of Antiquity. Among the weapons that made that expansion possible, few were as important as the Scutum, the large curved shield of the Roman legionary.
Designed to protect almost the entire body, the Scutum allowed soldiers to fight shoulder to shoulder and transform a formation of men into an authentic mobile wall. When the legions closed ranks and raised their shields in the famous testudo (“tortoise”) formation, they could advance under a hail of arrows and projectiles while maintaining the cohesion of their lines. More than just a defensive element, the Scutum was one of the tools that cemented Rome's military supremacy for generations.
Handcrafted reproduction: hand-painted wood with metal umbo
This reproduction of the Roman Scutum is crafted from hand-painted wood, with a brass-reinforced edge and a back structure reinforced with wooden strips to provide greater sturdiness. In its center stands out the characteristic metal umbo, designed to protect the wearer's hand and faithfully reproduce one of the most distinctive features of legionary equipment.
In combat, the shield not only served to stop blows and projectiles. It could also be used to push, break the enemy formation, or unbalance the adversary before delivering the decisive blow with the gladius.
