Historical Background:
Round shields, also known as bucklers depending on size and region, were used throughout Europe from the medieval period to the Renaissance. Favored by knights, infantrymen, and even civilian duelists, they provided quick defense and could be used offensively to shove or strike an opponent.
The Rodella style in particular originates from Southern Europe, especially Spain and Italy, where
lightweight and maneuverable shields
were paired with short swords for dueling. The brass rivets were not only decorative but also signified a touch of wealth or superior craftsmanship in original pieces of the time.
