Gift The Gjermundbu Helmet With Riveted Aventail, 2mm Steel
The Gjermundbu helmet with riveted aventail, 2mm steel
- Suitable for combat -
The Gjermundbu helmet was discovered in 1943 during the excavation of a Viking Age burial mound. It was reconstructed by experts and is now on display at the Museum of National Antiquities (Oldsaksamlinga) in Oslo. The helmet dates back to the year 970 AD.
It is an example of a spectacle helmet, which guarantees the fighter good historical protection while at the same time providing a sufficient field of vision. The helmet and especially its straps also show the close relationship with the group of so-called Nordic crested helmets.
There are currently some replicas of the Gjermundbu helmet on the market, but only a few are as original while offering the same level of protection as this battle-ready Ulfberth replica. The helmet bowl consists of two parts and is made of 2mm thick steel and carefully welded. Four hand-forged iron bands are riveted to the helmet bowl (the so-called buckles), which further reinforces the helmet. The spectacles, which are also handmade from 2mm thick steel, are also riveted, acting as a face shield that extends well below the wearer's nose. The spectacles have been given the same chisel notches as the original.
The helmet has a chainmail aventail made of riveted round rings (RRR), as remains of a riveted aventail were also found in the 1943 discovery. The forged spike of the helmet is only screwed on and can be easily removed, for example for safe exhibition in combat.
The helmet is deliberately not polished to a high shine, but has an artificially aged surface that underscores its authenticity. It has a high-quality riveted, adjustable padded liner, as well as a sturdy leather chin strap and a brass buckle.
This excellent helmet reconstruction is a piece of tangible history that is equally interesting and affordable for both the collector and the Viking Age re-enactor.
This helmet model is available in sizes S, M, and L.
