Renaissance dagger with leather sheath
Suitable for combat use, sk-c
Towards the end of the late Middle Ages and especially in the Renaissance, the defense or fencing dagger enjoyed great popularity, carried primarily as a sidearm. As a general rule, it was held in the left hand (hence the name lefthand dagger, lefthand or main gauche - left hand in French) and used in conjunction with a primary weapon (sword, rapier, or estoc) for a two-handed fighting style. With its distinctive guard, which offered protection to the primary hand and came in many different variations (straight, S-shaped, downward-curved, sometimes with an additional ring or guard), this secondary weapon was used mainly for defense and was designed to engage enemy swords in close combat to parry, deflect, block, or trap. But it was also effective in attack and very capable of stabbing an opponent. Ingeniously crafted and richly decorated daggers also served as an elegant display of the wearer's wealth, and knights and wealthy citizens often carried them demonstratively as a status symbol.
The affordable combat dagger we offer here has the typical characteristics of a traditional Renaissance parrying dagger. The unsharpened full-tang blade, made of EN45 spring steel, is tempered to approx. 48 HRC and is (invisibly) bolted to the pommel. A wide fuller runs along the center for about half its length. The handle consists of a four-sided grip with a wooden core and black leather wrap, which is framed by a cap pommel and a sturdy steel crossguard approximately 12 cm wide. The guard, which is curved towards the blade, ends in tapered, conical tips.
This beautiful thrusting weapon is delivered with a robust (approx. 3 mm thick), carefully stitched sheath of vegetable-tanned brown leather with a belt loop.
With its blunt edges approx. 1.5 mm / 2 mm thick and its rounded tip, this left-handed dagger is ideal for reenactment, light stage combat, or sparring. Of course, it is also ideal as a collector's item, decorative object, or accessory, for example to complete your costume.
