The late medieval and Renaissance parrying dagger (sometimes also called a quillon dagger, from the English term) owes its name to the shape of its crossguard, which was essentially a smaller version of the crossguards used for swords characteristic of that era. This particular type of dagger, often equipped with a protruding ring or half-ring on one side of the guard, was designed to parry or block enemy swords in hand-to-hand combat, and its tapered blade with a sharp tip was ideal for piercing padded armor and chainmail or for stabbing into gaps in an opponent's plate armor. The parrying dagger, which was normally used as an additional weapon alongside a sword or rapier and appeared in many different variations, enjoyed great popularity among knights, mercenaries (the famous Landsknechte, mostly Germans from the late 15th and 16th centuries), and even wealthy citizens.

The beautiful thrusting weapon we offer here is based on an original piece from the early 16th century (ca. 1510-1540), which is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) located in New York City. The blade is made of EN45 spring steel, has a diamond-shaped cross-section, and tapers to a sharp point. The cutting edges are not sharpened and the tang is screwed into the end of the handle (threaded nut). The guard and pommel, both artistically crafted, are made of brass with an antique finish and the handle section is carved from wood. The guard, slightly widened on both sides towards the ends, is equipped with a D-shaped side ring and the hexagonal pommel tapers upwards and ends with a beautifully decorated flat cap.

The Landsknecht/knight's dagger is delivered with a carefully stitched, vegetable-tanned leather sheath with sophisticated fittings (a chape with a button and a locket with movable carrying rings for attachment to a belt).

This Renaissance dagger is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
