Delight in Drinking Horn with Stand - Mjölnir, Thor's Hammer
Drinking horn with stand
Mjölnir, Thor's hammer
The drinking horn, generally made from cattle or goat horn, was a popular drinking vessel in many cultures and eras and was particularly important in ceremonies. It remained in use until the early modern period, especially in the Germanic areas of Europe. It was especially popular in Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages. The drinking horn is mentioned in both the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. Although horn fragments from the Viking Age are rarely found in archaeological excavations, the number of surviving metal fittings for drinking horns suggests that their use was much more widespread than the findings of actual horns suggest.
The drinking horn offered here is handmade from cattle horn, polished and decorated with an engraved Mjölnir motif. Mjölnir (= the crusher) is the powerful hammer of the thunder god Thor, considered the second most important Norse deity after his father Odin. In Germanic mythology, the dwarf Brokk forged Mjölnir, and it could be thrown without ever missing the target. With the hammer, Thor successfully fights against the giants who always threaten the lineages of the Vanir and Aesir. Today, Thor's hammer is a popular motif for jewelry, talismans, and decorative items, and is also an expression of paganism in a Christian environment.
Whether in the modern home or to recreate a medieval or Viking setting, this rustic and highly decorative vessel will catch the eye on any dining table.
For hygienic reasons, the inside of the horn is painted so that it is food-safe, so you can enjoy your favorite drink to the fullest.
The scope of delivery includes a practical drinking horn stand, easy to carry, made of hand-forged steel and with a simple principle: if the horn is inserted through the opening, the legs of the stand and the tip of the horn form a stable tripod. This means you can always safely set down your drinking horn.
A great gift idea for today's Viking!
