Discover Viking Seax Knife, Long Damascus Steel Seax, Wood and Bone Handle
Viking Seax knife, long Seax with Damascus blade and wood/bone handle,
Based on a find in Latvia
This handmade Viking Age knife with a sharp 256-layer Damascus steel blade* is based on an original Baltic Seax or war knife from the Salaspils Laukskolas archaeological cemetery in Latvia. The wood handle with bone inlays has an oval cross-section and therefore fits firmly in the hand. The handle ferrule and pommel cap are made of brass or steel. The pommel cap also has a practical eyelet for attaching a lanyard (a leather cord is included).
The beautiful vegetable-tanned leather sheath is decorated with elegant fittings. It is equipped with three carrying rings and a suspension system consisting of leather straps and strap distributors. This means the knife can be worn on the belt in typical Viking style.
The knife is available with a brown handle and brown leather sheath with brass fittings or with a black handle and black leather sheath with steel fittings.
This Seax is designed as a collector's item or decorative object.
*The term Damascus steel, Damascene steel or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard high-carbon steel and a soft low-carbon steel are joined by repeated forge welding and folding. The high-carbon steel provides higher hardness, better hardenability, and greater edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breakage. With this technology, which was developed in an era of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different coloring with varying carbon contents, impressive patterns of alternating layers are created, such as the so-called twist Damascus or rose Damascus. Due to these patterns, it was said that Damascus swords of the Middle Ages had an inherent magic.
