13th Century Mild Steel Chainmail Coif 8mm Riveted Round Rings (18 Gauge)

Designed after the classic

13th-century

style, this

round-riveted chainmail coif

offers essential head protection for High Medieval warriors. Crafted from

durable mild steel

with rings of

8 mm inner diameter,

each link is hand-riveted for added flexibility and strength. The

18-gauge steel rings

provide a solid balance of authenticity and wearable practicality, while the

natural oiled finish

protects against premature rust and adds a touch of historical accuracy.

Worn over a skull cap or padded arming cap, this coif covers the crown, cheeks, neck, and upper shoulders, forming a key defensive component of any cavalry kit. Its construction reflects the transitional period of European armor, where mail remained dominant even as plate armor began to emerge.

Whether used in historical training, as part of a full harness for living history, or displayed in a collection of medieval weaponry, this coif is built to reflect both

historical precision

and

battlefield realism

. The riveted construction ensures maximum durability during movement and use, making it a functional and visually authentic piece for any medieval enthusiast.

Historical Context:

Mail coifs like this were a staple of European warfare from the early Middle Ages through the late 14th century. Favored by both infantry and mounted knights, the coif evolved over time to be integrated with padded arming caps and hoods for layered defense. By the 13th century, the riveted coif had spread throughout Christendom.

Its modular design allowed it to be worn with helmets such as the nasal helm or great helm, offering vital protection without sacrificing neck mobility. As plate armor progressed, coifs became part of composite armor sets, falling into disuse by the 15th century.

Measurements:

Ring inner diameter:

8mm

Ring gauge:

18 Gauge

Coverage:

One size (fits a head circumference of approx. 24-25 inches)

Care Instructions:

Keep oiled when in storage to prevent rust.

After use, gently clean and re-oil the exposed metal.

Store in a dry environment away from prolonged humidity.

Occasional use of stainless metal polish can help maintain the look.

Note on Craftsmanship:

Each coif is

hand-assembled using traditional techniques

and minor variations in ring tension, finish, or alignment may exist.
