Purchase Beautiful Fountain Heroes' Belt
Medieval knight's belt of the Heroes of the Beautiful Fountain, leather with brass fittings, various sizes
The elegant and heavy medieval belt we offer here is a reconstruction of a girdle (also called dusing - English arse-girdle), as seen on the figure of King Arthur, which can be seen at the Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) in Nuremberg.
The Schöne Brunnen, designed in the shape of a Gothic church spire, was built between 1385 and 1396. The fountain includes forty painted figures that represent the worldview of the Holy Roman Empire, including the so-called Nine Worthies or Nine Good Heroes as representatives of pagan antiquity (Hector of Troy, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar), Judaism (Judas Maccabeus, David, Joshua), and Christianity (King Arthur, Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillon). In the courtly-knightly environment of the 14th century, this group of historical, biblical, or legendary heroes embodied the ideals of chivalry and knighthood that emerged in the Middle Ages.
Since the figures were made of sandstone, the fountain had to be restored several times over the centuries until the preserved remains of the original Gothic work were finally taken in the 19th century to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, where they can still be admired today. The fountain with its colorful figures that stands today in the main market square of Nuremberg is a replica that was reconstructed in 1912 based on the weathered original.
Our approximately 6 cm wide belt consists of a thick leather core, which is covered by an additional layer of thinner black leather sewn on the back. Like the Arthur statue in Nuremberg, the strap is decorated with a series of square plates and a quatrefoil brass belt buckle that features a floral motif. The knight's belt is available in three sizes and has no holes. The back of the buckle is equipped with a prong that anchors into the hole at the end of the strap.
This beautiful leather belt is an elegant and authentic addition to any medieval outfit and a perfect accessory for medieval markets, reenactments, or LARP events. It is best suited for settings of the High and Late Middle Ages and is especially suitable for portraying a 14th-century knight or nobleman.
