In 1066, Duke William the Conqueror’s warriors crossed the English Channel and faced King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, immortalized in the Bayeux Tapestry. Above their heads, Norman knights and infantry wore this unmistakable conical nasal helmet, a symbol of Norman expansion through England, Southern Italy, and Sicily. Heir to the Scandinavian and Carolingian tradition, its conical dome deflected blows from above, while the extended nasal guard protected the face without compromising vision or breathing—a key transition in medieval protection between the 10th and 12th centuries.
