Enjoy the Broken Back Sax, Viking Sax Knife, Damascus Steel
Broken back sax, Viking knife with Damascus blade and wood/bone handle
This handmade Viking Sax (Seax) knife, also called a broken back Sax (Seax) due to its special blade shape, has a sharp blade made of 256-layer Damascus steel* and a wood and bone handle with a brass ferrule and end cap. The cap has a practical eyelet for attaching a lanyard or for easily drawing the knife from the sheath (a leather strap is included).
The short Sax (Seax) comes with a beautiful sheath made of vegetable-tanned and hand-dyed leather with richly decorated brass fittings. The carrying system consists of two rings, a strap distributor, and three leather straps. Carrying systems of this type were widespread in the Viking Age. The belt distributor was used to distribute the individual straps so that the sword or Sax (Seax) knife could be worn on the belt at an optimal angle for a quick draw from the sheath.
This scramasax is designed as a collector's item or decorative object.
*The term Damascus steel, Damask steel, or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made from two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered an ancient stronghold and the origin of Damascus steel production. Typically, a hard high-carbon steel and a soft low-carbon steel are joined by repeated forge welding and folding. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and greater edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade greater elasticity and higher resistance to breakage. With this technology, which was developed in an era of poor and changing steel qualities, the positive properties of different steels can be combined. Due to the different colors of the different carbon contents, impressive patterns of alternating layers are created, such as the so-called twist Damascus or rose Damascus. Due to these patterns, Damascus swords of the Middle Ages were said to have inherent magic.
Details:
- Blade material: Damascus steel (4340 and 1070 steel, 256 layers), sharp edge
- Total length: approx. 32 cm
- Blade length: approx. 19 cm
- Weight: approx. 230 g (approx. 430 g with sheath)
- Sheath made of leather and brass with hanger
The above specifications may vary slightly from copy to copy.
The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend maintaining the blade regularly, for example with Ballistol, a universal oil ideal for preserving steel products.
Since bone and wood are natural products, variations in color and/or grain are quite normal. Therefore, no two handles of this Viking Sax (Seax) are identical, and the images above are for illustrative purposes only.
